Our Team

It takes more than a village
It takes a village full of the right people. We recognize your experience at Spectacle does not begin and end in the exam room. From scheduling and prepping for your exam to finding your perfect pair of glasses or contacts, each person you’ll encounter along the way is focused on the same thing –YOU.

Dr. Marc Schmitt
OPTOMETRIST
Education: Pacific University College of Optometry
Specialties: dry eye disease, LASIK, glaucoma, and macular degeneration
Dr. Schmitt is a patient first and a doctor second, meaning, anything he prescribes to his patients he has likely tried out on himself first. Preventative medicine, nutrition, and whole-body wellness also strongly influence how he views his role as an eye care provider.
During an exam with Dr. Schmitt, you can expect technology-driven education regarding your eye health and vision. Typically complex concepts will be stripped of mysterious jargon. This allows each patient to help advocate for themselves. At the end of your exam, you and Dr. Schmitt will create tailored solutions that align with your visual needs and goals.
If there was an office talent show what would be your talent?
If we hold an office talent show, I’d wow everyone with my ability to play the Rocky theme song on the harmonica. Either that, or give a power point presentation on the importance of proper lid and lash hygiene for the long-term health of the eye.
What did you want to grow and up do when you were five years old?
When I was five, I was pretty sure I’d be a professional ice cream taster when I grew up. Come adulthood, it’s turned out to be a solid side-gig.

Dr. Sonya Tran
OPTOMETRIST
Education: Pacific University College of Optometry
Specialties: dry eye disease, cataract surgery co-management, contact lenses, vision threatening disease management
Dr. Tran started her eye care career as an optometric technician where she grew her passion for helping others. She believes that her patients’ needs are to be met with a personal touch and hopes to create a meaningful connection with each person she sees. Dr. Tran’s primary goal is to improve her patients’ lives by addressing their visual needs.
While native to Hawaii, Dr. Tran has been practicing in Oregon for the last several years. Working solely in private practice has allowed her to develop interpersonal and customized care.
What’s the most rewarding aspect of your job?
Being able to make a difference for someone. Whether it is to help them see again, make their eyes feel more comfortable, or just brightening someone’s day from their visit with us.
If you could learn any new language, which one would you choose and why?
Chinese! It’s always been a goal of mine to be proficient in Mandarin. My dad sent my sister and me to lessons before, but I did not take it seriously enough. It would be nice to be able to speak to my dad in his native tongue one day. I also think that the Chinese language just sounds cool and can be very beautiful.

Dr. Minh Jones
OPTOMETRIST
Education: Illinois College of Optometry
Specialties: dry eye disease, ocular disease, diabetic eye disease, specialty contact lenses, myopia control in children
Dr. Jones started his career in eye care as an optician, five years before attending optometry school. While attending Illinois College of Optometry, he enjoyed learning the complexities of our vision and and eyes. During his eye exams, he aims to give his patients not only clear but also comfortable and stable visual performance. He also hopes that each of his patients leaves the exam room learning at least one new things about their eyes or their vision correction options.
Since graduating, Dr. Jones has been working in private practice and LASIK surgery centers in Portland. He enjoys finding solutions for his patients by utilizing the skills he learned in school and through his various clinical rotations in Atlanta, West Haven, and Detroit.
How do you approach patient care to ensure they feel comfortable and understood?
At Spectacle, I ensure patients feel comfortable and understood by actively listening to their concerns about vision and eye health. By explaining diagnoses and treatment options in clear, simple terms and involving them in decisions about their care, I create a supportive environment that fosters trust and reassurance.
Do you have a favorite recipe or type of cuisine you love to cook or try?
I love to cook Vietnamese cuisine, especially recreating dishes I enjoyed growing up. One of my favorites is bánh xèo, as it allows me to experiment with flavors and ingredients while bringing back fond memories of family meals. The crispy pancakes filled with savory ingredients and served with fresh herbs make it a fun and rewarding dish to prepare and share.

Dr. Marianne Tran
OPTOMETRIST
Education: University of Houston College of Optometry
Specialties: dry eye disease, cataract/LASIK co-management, contact lenses, diabetic eye disease
Dr. Marianne first became interested in optometry at a young age when she was told she did not need glasses (even though she REALLY wanted them). Years later, after graduating from the University of Houston’s optometry program and initially working in Texas, she found herself venturing out to the Pacific Northwest to be reunited with her sister and explore the outdoors.
Dr. Marianne’s goals in the exam room extend beyond helping each patient see 20/20. She hopes to educate her patients thoroughly enough to become their own eye health advocate and create a meaningful connection well beyond the eyes.
